Lynn McLean's work is marked by an affection for the past, and the 1000 Islands region where she was born and raised. In particular, the mystery of old photographs intrigues her: the way a viewer can be transported to a long forgotten time, and the way these intimate images can illicit an emotional response.
Lynn's multi-media artworks are created using layers of paint, inks and encaustic wax to create innovative compositions, while juxtaposing that intuitive work with detailed imagery from photo-transfers. At first glance, the finished piece appears as a striated and stained historic image, representing the typical mistreatment of our photographic relics. Upon closer inspection, the artwork reveals McLean's deep love for the 1000 Islands region of Canada, of which most of her subject matter originates.
“Mixed media and waxes always surprises me with randomness, creating depths and clarity that I love”.
Through her use of mixed media and waxes, McLean works to create a timeless appearance in her work, whether she is making a contemporary photograph appear historic, or vice versa. She feels that so much history and memory lives in our photographs that they need to be celebrated.
