Vintage Postcards of The 1000 Islands
For this series I wanted to depict this strikingly picturesque region of Ontario in a unique way. In the past I have painted many pieces showcasing this island paradise. This time I wanted to take a totally different look at landscape painting using mixed media. I chose the theme of vintage postcards because they are always thought provoking with their innocence and incongruous colouring and easily identifiable subjects.
Over time these colourful gems of the past may suffer physical damages. This I portrayed by blurring the lines between paint, ink, collage, waxes, graffiti and photography. Vintage postcards come to us, if we are lucky, sometimes unexpectedly while rummaging through family memorabilia and treasure boxes. Places we visited and wished to remember at the time. I present them here to appreciate these scenes anew. The places I visited and grew up around. I most enjoy the exaggerated representation of colour to reflect the passage of time.
